De wegen van God zijn ondoorgrondelijk, daar kan ik al lang van getuigen. Door een uitgebreid proces van onderscheiding ben ik tot de conclusie gekomen dat God mij roept om in te treden in het religieuze leven. Al meerdere jaren werden kleine zaadjes geplant en in het afgelopen jaar is God expliciet geworden. Ook het verlangen aan mijn kant om Christus op deze specifieke manier te volgen is heel groot geworden.
Binnenkort zal ik gaan intreden bij het Instituut van het Mensgeworden Woord, dat oorspronkelijk uit Argentinië komt en wordt afgekort met IVE, van het Spaanstalige Instituto del Verbo Encarnado. Veel mensen hier kennen deze religieuze familie vooral van de “blauwe zusters”, die eigenlijk beter “servidoras” genoemd kunnen worden naar hun naam Dienaressen van de Heer en de Maagd van Matará. De religieuze familie bestaat uit paters, broeders, zusters en derde orde leden, verspreid over alle continenten, zowel actief als contemplatief. In Nederland zijn de paters IVE actief in parochies in het bisdom Haarlem-Amsterdam en Roermond en bij verschillende activiteiten.
Om als diocesaan priester in te treden in het religieuze leven is een minder gebruikelijke stap, maar niet onbekend. Ruim zes jaar ben ik diocesaan priester, dat is ook wat God van mij vroeg en ik heb met al mijn tekortkomingen gegeven wat ik kan. Nu vraagt God aan mij een andere weg te gaan. Het religieuze leven is een manier om Christus van meer nabij te volgen, om te streven naar de meest volmaakte eenwording met Hem en dat door middel van de geloften van armoede, kuisheid en gehoorzaamheid. Een diocesaan priester belooft gehoorzaamheid aan de bisschop en kuisheid, de geloften die een religieus aflegt zijn in zekere zin meer allesomvattend. De religieuze priester is daarmee niet beter dan de diocesane priester, het is een andere manier van leven en overgave die de Heer nu van mij vraagt. In leven van gemeenschap volgens de genoemde geloften en de toewijding aan Maria wil ik mij dan volledig toewijden aan Jezus Christus. Vanuit die toewijding zullen dan evangelisatie, missie, verkondiging van het geloof en andere apostolaten komen.
Deze stap is een offer, voor mij en voor de Kerk hier in Nederland. Elke priester is hier zo hard nodig. Maar als God dit vraagt, dan zal Hij het offer ook ruim belonen. Daarbij werd ik onder andere geïnspireerd door wat in het Evangelie staat: “Jezus riep tot zich die Hij zelf wilde…” (Marcus 3, 13).
Concreet betekent dit: tot en met Kerstmis blijf ik in de parochies van “Haarlem & BOAZ” met al het priesterlijke werk. Wel zal ik langzaamaan taken afronden en overdragen aan anderen. Rond de jaarwisseling zal ik vertrekken naar Italië en daar beginnen aan het noviciaat, dat zeker een jaar duurt. Wat daarna zal komen, dat weten God en mijn toekomstige oversten!
Ik besef dat dit voor velen een verrassing kan zijn en dat er vragen leven. Ik sta er altijd voor open om te praten, maar wil proberen om mijn huidige pastorale taken en verantwoordelijkheden in “Haarlem & BOAZ” zo goed mogelijk te kunnen volbrengen. Dus ik vraag begrip als ik niet meteen beschikbaar ben voor vragen of gesprek over deze nieuwe stap.
Met deze stap ben ik vanaf het begin van mijn onderscheiding heel expliciet aan het bidden voor nieuwe roepingen tot het priesterschap voor ons bisdom en ons vaderland. Het is zo belangrijk dat we allemaal hard bidden dat jonge mensen de openheid zullen hebben om Gods roepstem te verstaan en de moed om er genereus op te antwoorden. Ook al neem ik nog niet nu afscheid, ik wil in het bijzonder de Bisschop, Mgr. Hendriks bedanken voor de beschikbaarheid en wijsheid op deze weg. Ik blijf bidden voor de Bisschop en het bisdom.
Wij allemaal zijn in gebed en Eucharistie verbonden, nu en altijd. Van harte hoop en bid ik dat iedereen telkens weer opnieuw zich opent voor de stem van de Heilige Geest om te horen wat Hij van ieder van ons vraagt en om Christus te volgen, waar Hij ook gaat. Waar Christus is, daar is hét Leven.

Wat is het Instituut van het Mensgeworden Woord?
Het IVE is een katholiek religieus instituut van diocesaan recht, gesticht in Argentinië op 25 maart 1984 door Pater Carlos Miguel Buela, op dezelfde dag dat H. Johannes Paulus II de hele wereld heeft toegewijd aan Onze Lieve Vrouw van Fatima. Zijn leden zijn priesters, seminaristen en coadjutor broeders. Onze roeping is om Christus van meer nabij te volgen onder de inspiratie van de Heilige Geest. We willen ons geheel toewijden aan God als onze grootste Liefde, zijn Heerlijkheid zoeken in een nieuwe en speciale manier van leven, voor de opbouw van de Kerk en de redding van de zielen.
Pater Buela stichtte ook de zustertak van dezelfde religieuze familie, het instituut Dienaressen van de Heer en de Maagd van Matará, op 19 Maart 1988. In het Spaans heten de zusters oorspronkelijk “Servidoras del Señor y de la Virgen de Matará” en dit wordt afgekort als SSVM. De zusters worden in Nederland meestal “blauwe zusters” genoemd, maar kunnen eigenlijk beter “servidoras” worden genoemd, zoals in veel andere landen. Samen met de leken van de Derde Orde vormen alle leden samen de Religieuze Familie van het Mensgeworden Woord. De paters en zusters zijn met gezamenlijk meer dan 2000 leden verspreid in missies over de gehele wereld op alle continenten.
Wat is de essentie van de missie van het IVE?
Het IVE ontleent zijn naam aan de gebeurtenis van de Menswording, die “het eerste en fundamentele mysterie van Jezus Christus is” (H. Johannes Paulus II). Het Woord van God kwam in de wereld, nam de menselijke natuur aan en leefde onder ons als mens om ons te verlossen.
Wij willen zijn als een andere menswording van het Woord, zodat de Menswording van Christus aanwezig kan zijn in de gehele mensheid, “om Christus in alles te brengen” (Efeziërs 1, 10). Om die reden is ons specifieke doel de evangelisatie van de cultuur, zodat het Evangelie diep geworteld kan zijn in het leven en de cultuur van elk land. Daarom leggen we al onze kracht in op het incultureren van het Evangelie, dat is, om de Menswording van Christus uit te breiden “naar alle mensen, in de gehele mens en in alle uitingen van de mens” (Constituties, nr. 5), daarbij alle vormen van zonde en leugen afwijzend.
Waar kunt u meer lezen over de IVE en hun werken?
Heeft deze stap te maken met kwesties in het leven als diocesaan priester of met problemen met bisdom of parochie?
Nee. Een negatieve motivatie zou een te smalle basis zijn voor een stap die zo ver gaat. Het leven als priester in het Nederlandse parochieleven is niet gemakkelijk en moet altijd met nog grotere zorg benaderd worden, maar deze roeping is een roeping van God die kwam op een moment dat ik in Haarlem juist veel bezig mocht zijn met alle leeftijden, met allerlei initiatieven, etc.
Word ik monnik?
Nee, de IVE heeft een actieve en contemplatieve tak. De contemplatieve leden worden monniken genoemd, ik treed in bij de actieve paters.
Wat is het noviciaat?
Het noviciaat is het eerste jaar van voorbereiding op en vorming in het religieuze leven. In een gemeenschap leven en op meerdere manieren leren en gevormd worden in de dagelijkse praktijk van het religieuze leven en de spiritualiteit van het instituut. De IVE heeft noviciaten op een aantal plekken verspreid over de wereld; voor Europa is dat in Italië, niet ver van Rome. Na het noviciaat leg ik dan de eerste, tijdelijke geloften af.
Hoe gaat het dan verder?
Waar ik daarna heen ga en wat voor missie ik ga doen: geen idee. De tijdelijke geloften worden wel een aantal jaar hernieuwd en daarna zal ik dan, Deo volente, de eeuwige geloften afleggen. Maar dat duurt nog lang!

A new step
Gods ways are unfathomable, that is a truth of which I can testify since many years. Through an extended process of discernment, I have come to the conviction that God is calling me to enter religious life. Since several years small seeds were planted and this past year God has become explicit. Also on my side, the desire to follow Christ in this specific manner has grown much.
Soon I will enter the Institute of the Incarnate Word, usually abbreviated as IVE, following the original Spanish name Instituto del Verbo Encarnado. Many people know this religious family mostly because of the “blue sisters”, better called “servidoras” because of their full name Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará. The religious family consists of fathers, brothers, sisters, and third order members, spread over all continents, both active and contemplative. In the Netherlands the fathers are active in parishes in the dioceses of Haarlem-Amsterdam and Roermond and at several activities.
Entering religious life as a diocesan priest is less common, but not unknown. I have been a diocesan priest since over six years, which is what God has asked of me and in which I have tried to give my all despite my shortcomings. Now God asks of me to take another path. Religious life is a way of following Christ more closely, striving for the most perfect unity with Him through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. A diocesan priest promises obedience to the bishop and chastity, the vows that a religious professes are in some way more comprehensive and total. This does not mean that any particular religious priest is better than the diocesan priest, but it is a different way of life and abandonment, which the Lord is asking of me. In the community life according to the three vows and the consecration to Our Lady I desire to devote myself completely to Jesus Christ. Flowing from that surrender will come evangelization, mission, proclamation of the faith, and other apostolates.
This step is a sacrifice, for me and the Church here in the Netherlands. Every priest is needed so much here. But if this is what God asks, then He will reward the sacrifice abundantly. In this I was inspired by this line in the Gospel: “Jesus called to Himself whomever He wanted…” (Mark 3:13).
Concretely, this means: until Christmas I will stay in the parishes of Haarlem areas with all the priestly ministry. Slowly I will pass on tasks and responsibilities to others. At or close to New Year’s I will leave to Italy and start the Novitiate there, which lasts a full year. Whatever will come after that, only God and my future superiors know!
I am fully aware that this may be a surprise to many and that there are many questions. I am always open for conversation, but want to be serious about fulfilling my current pastoral duties and responsibilities in Haarlem and area until the end. Hence, I ask for understanding if I am not immediately available for questions or conversation about this new step.
Together with this new step I have been praying explicitly for new priestly vocations for our diocese and home country. It is so important that we all pray hard that young people will be open to hear Gods calling and be courageous to answer his call generously. And even though I am not saying goodbye yet, I do want to show my special gratitude to Bishop Hendriks for his availability and wisdom in this period. I will always keep praying for the Bishop and the diocese.
We all will remain united in prayer and the Eucharist, now and always. With all my heart I hope and pray that we all will open ourselves to the voice of the Holy Spirit again and again to hear what He asks of each one of us, and to follow Christ, wherever He will go. Where Christ is, there is Life!

What is the Institute of the Incarnate Word?
The IVE is a Catholic Religious Institute of Diocesan Right founded in Argentina on March 25, 1984 by Reverend Father Carlos Miguel Buela, the very same day that Saint John Paul II consecrated the entire world to Our Lady of Fatima. Its members are priests, seminarians and coadjutor brothers. Our vocation is to follow Christ more closely under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We want to dedicate ourselves totally to God as our supreme Love, seeking his Glory in a new and special way of life, for the edification of the Church and the salvation of souls.
Father Buela also founded a women religious congregation in the same religious family, the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, on March 19, 1988. In Spanish they are originally called “Servidoras del Señor y de la Virgen de Matará”, abbreviated as SSVM. Together with the members of the Third Order, all members form the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word. The father, brothers, and sisters altogether count over 2000 members, spread in missions in the whole world on all continents.
What is the essence of the mission of the IVE?
The IVE takes its name from the event of the Incarnation, which is “the first and fundamental mystery of Jesus Christ” (St. John Paul II). The Word of God came to the world, took a human nature and lived among us as man to save us. We want to be like another incarnation of the Word, so that the Incarnation of Christ be present in all mankind, “to bring Christ to all things” (Eph 1: 10).
For that reason, our specific aim is the evangelization of culture, so that the Gospel can have its roots deep in the life and culture of each nation. Therefore, we apply all our strength to inculturate the Gospel, i.e., to prolong the Incarnation of Christ “to all men, in the whole man, and in all of the manifestations of man”, by rejecting all forms of sin and lies.

Does this step have anything to do with issues of living as a diocesan priest or with problems with diocese or parish?
No. A negative motivation would be too small a foundation for such a huge step. Living as a priest in the Dutch parish life is certainly not easy and should be approached with ever greater care, but this vocation to which God is calling me is a vocation from God that came at a moment that I myself was so happy to be very active with all age groups and various initiatives, etc.
Do I become a monk?
No, the IVE has an active and contemplative branch. The contemplative members are called monks, I am entering the active fathers.
What is the Novitiate?
The Novitiate is the first year of preparation to and formation in the religious life. Living in a community and being formed in several ways in the daily practice of religious life and the spirituality of the institute. The IVE has Novitiates in several places spread throughout the world; for Europe, the Novitiate is in Italy, not far from Rome. After the Novitiate I will profess first, temporary vows.
And after that?
Where I will go after that and the kind of mission I will receive: no clue. In the course of several years I will renew temporary vows and then, God willing, profess perpetual vows. But that is still far off!
